Analysis of Facebook Library Pages

I have recently concluded becoming a fan and examining the page content of libraries that use Facebook. While the content and features of the pages range from sophisticated to simple, the usefulness of these pages seems limited by lack of use. The hope would seem to be that users of Facebook would become a fans of the libraries and that use would increase through the social networking. The low number of fans for major libraries would seem to indicate that use does not increase quickly. Just because you are a fan of the library does not mean that you are a user. Also, it is far easier to search for a library using common search engines, such as Google, than the clumsy Facebook search box.
There are however some features of the Facebook interface that would be attractive to libraries. The first is chat. Libraries would be able to use chat for reference using Facebook on a limited basis to determine whether this would be a useful service option. They would be able to promote this on their main webpage. Secondly, libraries are not necessarily easy to find from the homepage of some educational facilities. Facebook might offer some slight increases in exposure points for libraries. The hope of such Facebook pages might be to steer patrons to the libraries home page.
Of advantage to patrons using this service? The libraries send out updates that include new services and programs. These are visible on the patrons facebook page.
While I do not think Facebook will work very well for most libraries, it cannot work unless it is promoted on the libraries main page.

I don't know, I'll look it up.
